Kane Williamson captain, NZ picked ODI World Cup squad 2023

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has officially revealed their 15-member squad for the 50-over World Cup, set to commence on October 5th in Ahmedabad. Notably, the board made their squad announcement on Monday, and it features Kane Williamson, despite his ongoing recovery from a knee injury.

Although Kane Williamson sustained a knee injury during the Indian Premier League, his recovery progress has been encouraging enough for NZC to include him in the World Cup squad. However, his readiness to participate in the tournament’s opening match remains uncertain due to his injury status.

Gary Stead On Kane Williamson: He has applied phenomenal dedication to his rehabilitation and has been supported by a strong group of experts around him, He’s left no stone unturned in trying to get back to playing cricket at the highest level. We are delighted to be in a place to select him. The World Cup is not a short tournament and we will continue to monitor his progress over the next month ahead of the first tournament match.”

In the upcoming ODI World Cup, Kane Williamson will be leading the New Zealand team for the fourth time. He will be joined by Tim Southee, who is also playing in his fourth World Cup. Additionally, six new players will be making their very first appearances in this important tournament: Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, and Will Young have all earned their spots in the ODI World Cup team for the first time.

Finn Allen and Kyle Jamieson were not included in the team. Despite Finn Allen’s impressive century against Bangladesh in March, he wasn’t selected, and Will Young will be the opening batsman instead. Kyle Jamieson, who received a high bid in the IPL auction, was left out, with Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, and Trent Boult chosen as the primary fast bowlers.

“Gary Stead’s Difficult Selection Decisions”

The head coach of New Zealand Gary Stead admitted that he faced tough calls while naming the team. “It’s always a special time to name a tournament team and I’d like to congratulate the 15 players selected today. It’s a great honor to represent your country at a World Cup,” Stead said. “From Kane and Tim heading to their fourth tournament to the guys selected for the first time, it’s always a very exciting time. As with any squad named for an ICC tournament, there have been some tough calls and there will be some disappointed players,”

New Zealand is in Group A for the big cricket tournament. They will play against teams like England, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and the Netherlands. Their first match is on October 5th against England at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Kiwis want to do well, just like they did in the 2019 World Cup. In that tournament, they made it to the final match, but they lost to England because of a special rule about how many runs they scored from boundaries.
